This is a day long summit to explore transportation demand management (TDM) in Nashville. It will be an exciting day filled with insightful discussions, networking opportunities, and innovative ideas. Attendees will hear from various departments and agencies about how to reduce traffic congestion through sustainable modes of transportation. 

This is an in-person event open to all. Attendees will enjoy free breakfast and lunch. Register to attend a session or two or stay for the whole day!

9:15 - 10:45 am Tennessee Department of Transportation TDM Stakeholder Meeting

In 2017, the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Long Range Planning Division conducted a statewide TDM study that led to the production of the Statewide TDM Plan. The Plan outlines various TDM strategies that could be used to lower SOV trips while supporting economic growth across the state. TDOT is currently in the process of updating this Plan - which is expected to be complete by Fall 2025.

This interactive session with give attendees the opportunity to learn about the current status of the TDOT's updated TDM Plan. This is the second stakeholder meeting hosted by TDOT, AltaGo, and AECOM. The session is open to all and attendees will enjoy free breakfast.

10:50 - 11:40 am The History of TDM: Lessons Learned and How to Apply Them Today

Join Thom Cerny, AICP, TDM-CP as he delves into the history of TDM and lessons learned during this 45 minute session.

Explore the evolution of TDM through an entertaining “History of TDM” presentation. Participate in a lively discussion to identify contemporary challenges for TDM initiatives and a group activity to adapt lessons learned for diverse future scenarios.

11:40 am Lunch, Networking, and Micromobility Demos 

Enjoy free lunch and network local agencies to discuss sustainable transportation resources available for Nashville, Davidson County, and Tennessee. Plus, head out to parking lot and try an e-scooter or e-bicycle compliments of Bird, Lime, and Spin! 

 

12:00 pm Metro Update with Mayor of Nashville & Davidson County Freddie O'Connell 

Hear from the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County's tenth mayor, Freddie O'Connell. Mayor O'Connell served on the Metro Council from 2015 - 2023 representing District 19, which includes the downtown core, Germantown, and parts of North Nashville. 

In his time on the Metro Council, Mayor O'Connell worked to limit the impact of poverty, to strengthen neighborhoods, and to make sure everyone participates as our economy grows. He oversaw an overhaul of the Metro Homlessness Commission as well as an increase in the number of Nashvillians who benefitted from property tax freezes and rebates, and passed green energy bills that reduce the costs for Metro, ensuring cleaner air and water, and increasing climate resiliency. 

Mayor O'Connell recently unveiled details of his transportation improvement program, Choose How You Move: An All-Access Pass to Sidewalks, Signals, Service, and Safety. 

 

12:30 pm Nashville Department of Transportation Director Diana Alarcon, CAPP

Diana Alarcon has more than 30 years of private and public sector experiences. She currently serves as Director for the Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure for Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County. The Department is responsible for sustainable transportation policy, planning & programming, street maintenance, traffic engineering, engineering, and parking.

Director Alarcon champions sustainability and mobility initiatives, such as complete street designs and citywide bike ways and greenways. She is creating a true multimodal transportation network for bicyclist, pedestrians, transit, and vehicles through reassignment of existing rights-of-way and ensuring the connectivity.  She also builds partnerships with the private sector on creating mobility hubs that connects all modes including new trending modes such as micromobility.

She is an active member in the following organizations to change the approach to transportation: Women in Transportation (WTS) Seminar, American Society of Civil Engineer (ASCE), Urban Land Institute; American Planning Association; National Transit Institute; American Public Work Association; National Association of City Transportation Officials; and the International Parking & Mobility Institute.

 

1:00 pm Choose How You Move Update with Director of Transportation Planning in the Mayor's Office Michael Briggs, AICP

Learn more about Mayor O'Connell's Choose How You Move All-Access Pass to Sidewalks, Signals, Service, & Safety from Michael Briggs, AICP. Michael is the Metropolitan Goverment of Nashville and Davidson County's Director of Transportation Planning. He's advised Mayor O'Connell's office on developing a transit improvement program with a project team to establish dedicated transit funding and transportation improvements that align with other Nashville wide plans including NashvilleNext, nMotion, and WalknBike. Prior to Metro, Michael was the Director of Mobility & Transportation for Vanderbilt University. He was also manager of Multimodal Transportation Planning at the Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County. 

 

1:30 pm East Bank Redevelopment Update with Ben York, PE and TDM at Nissan Stadium with Tennessee Titan's Vice President of Communications and Corporate Affairs Kate Guerra

Curious about the construction taking place in the Nissan Stadium parking lot? We've got you covered. Hear from program manager, Ben York, about the process of developing one of Metro's most robust community engagement efforts since NashvilleNext. Today, the East Bank is compromised of mostly asphalt parking lots, industrial and commercial uses, and the Nissan Stadium. Learn what the East Bank will look like in 5, 10, and 15 years and how it corralates to the way Nashvillians will move around the city. Followed by an update from VP of Communications and Corporate Affairs for the Tennessee Titans, Kate Guerra about how the Titan's are moving folks to and from the stadium this football season.

Join Civic Design Center and Transit Alliance of Middle Tennessee for a two part session highlighting transit oriented developments and how they support Transit Centers. Participate in a design charrette of what an East Bank Transit Center could look like for Nashville.

The TDM Summit is apart of the national TDM Week effort hosted by the Assocation for Commuter Transportation. TDM Week is Monday, September 16 - Friday, September 20. 

TDM Week is an opportunity to create awareness among decision-makers and key TDM stakeholders about the importance of including a range of safe and reliable modes of transportation for all users in the transportation planning process. This week is a time to share the importance of enacting programs that reduce the carbon footprint of transportation in our communities.
