This panel brings together leaders from IndyGo, WeGo Public Transit, the Nashville Department of Transportation, and the Transit Alliance of Middle Tennessee to explore how major investments—like transportation referendums—can be leveraged to not only expand service but also shift commuter behavior.

Panelists will discuss how Indianapolis navigated the post-referendum landscape to grow its transit system, engage the public, and implement Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies that boosted ridership. Nashville leaders will reflect on how these lessons can inform their own path forward, with a focus on building public trust, fostering partnerships, and using TDM programming to support sustainable growth.

Transportation Demand Management (TDM) is more than a strategy—it’s a movement gaining momentum across Tennessee. This session highlights how local and statewide programs are putting TDM into action to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and shift commuter behavior.

 The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will provide an update on its statewide TDM program, including new tools, regional coordination efforts, and long-term vision. Hear from the Nashville Connector team on how the city is engaging employers, commuters, and neighborhoods through innovative campaigns and partnerships. Vanderbilt University will share how its campus-wide mobility strategy is driving mode shift and supporting sustainability goals. The Transportation Management Association (TMA) Group will share their engagement programs to provide innovative transportation solutions and employer commute benefit services.

This session will feature updates from WeGo Public Transit, GNRC, and TDOT to discuss updates on projects and services—including commuter rail, express bus, and regional access improvements.

Panelists will explore how these initiatives are not only expanding mobility options but also supporting Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies and policies across the region. From infrastructure to service delivery, this discussion will highlight how regional collaboration is driving smarter, more sustainable travel choices in both urban and suburban contexts.

The Mayor’s Office will share an update on Choose How You Move, Nashville’s citywide initiative to promote smarter, more sustainable travel choices. This session will highlight recent progress, current priorities, and upcoming projects aimed at reducing congestion, expanding mobility options, and building a more connected, equitable city.

Michael Briggs, Deputy Chief Program Officer for Choose How You Move, will discuss how the initiative is aligning city departments, engaging the public, and supporting Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies that make it easier for residents to walk, bike, ride transit, and share the ride.

TDM in Special Events: Keeping Nashville Moving During Its Busiest Moments

As Nashville continues to grow as a destination for major events—from NFL games and concerts to festivals and downtown celebrations—so does the complexity of managing mobility for thousands of residents and visitors. This session brings together leaders from the Tennessee Titans, NDOT, MNPD, and the East Bank team to explore how the city is coordinating across agencies to keep people moving safely, efficiently, and sustainably.

Panelists will share how Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies are being applied in real-time to reduce congestion, improve access, and balance safety with mobility during high-attendance events. From transit and micromobility to traffic operations and public safety, this session will highlight the partnerships, planning, and lessons learned that are shaping the future of event-based transportation in Nashville.

The TDM Summit is apart of the national TDM Week effort hosted by the Assocation for Commuter Transportation. TDM Week is Monday, September 15 - Friday, September 19. 

TDM Week is an opportunity to create awareness among decision-makers and key TDM stakeholders about the importance of including a range of safe and reliable modes of transportation for all users in the transportation planning process. This week is a time to share the importance of enacting programs that reduce the carbon footprint of transportation in our communities.
